Self-Love for Valentine’s Day💖
By Parlee Jones
… As I grow older, as gracefully as possible, I have taken a liking to the term SELF-CARE! Self-care is care provided “for you, by you.” It’s about identifying your own needs and taking steps to meet them. It is taking the time to do some things that nurture you.
Self-care is about taking proper care of yourself and treating yourself as kindly as you treat others. In her 1988 book, A Burst of Light, Audre Lorde wrote that “caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.”
When we disregard our own needs, forget to nurture ourselves, often we become unhappy and feel resentment. Especially when we are caring for others. Self-care means treating yourself as a worthwhile person and showing that you are valuable, competent and deserving.
Here are a few examples of what self-care can look like this Valentine’s “season”:
💙 Speak with a trusted friend.
🌲 Take a walk and enjoy nature. (Bundle up!)
😮 Practice breathing exercises.
🍆 Work towards eating healthy
🌃 Get enough sleep.
💤 Make room for a nap. Rest and “recharge.”
👏 Break with old customs. If you’re lonely or grieving, try something new — you’ll avoid old triggers and forge new, enjoyable experiences!
💫 Forget perfection. Don’t sweat material gift-giving.
Read a good book recommended by a friend.
Buy yourself a little something — something that you have really wanted.
And … if you really want to take that self-care to the next level, thriving in 2018, distance yourself from anyone and anything in your life that is bringing you pain and sorrow. Life is too short for this to be an aspect of your life!
Happy Valentine’s Day!💖💖💖
And…tomorrow is Bob Marley’s birthday!
