From Congressman Jim McGovern’s office:
House Rules Committee Democrats today sent the following letter to the Democratic Caucus endorsing Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House …
Dear Colleagues –
We write to express our wholehearted endorsement of Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House in the 116th Congress. The reasons are many.
No one is better suited for this important position than one of the most effective speakers in history.
Her speakership included House passage of historic reforms including the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, along with the first increase in the minimum wage in a decade.
Nearly every segment of our society benefited from her leadership and commitment to public service.
With Nancy Pelosi, we know what we are getting: an experienced leader with a proven track record who is unafraid to fight on behalf of our shared values. We saw this again and again this Congress as Leader Pelosi held our Caucus together to protect landmark achievements like the Affordable Care Act despite Republican control of the Senate, the House and the White House.
She proved the pundits and prognosticators wrong, and our nation is stronger because she defied the odds. That didn’t happen by accident. It was the result of her collaborative leadership style and ability to rally others behind a progressive agenda.
Leader Pelosi has continued to lead by consensus as we work to draft a Democratic rules package for the upcoming Congress. Months ago, she initiated an unprecedented process for soliciting House rules change ideas from our entire Caucus. Leader Pelosi encouraged all Members to get involved, resulting in a package that will restore regular order, get committees working again, and place power back into the hands of individual Members. Her commitment to this process will create a more professional House.
As we look ahead to next Congress, we believe it is especially important to have a woman at the leadership table during negotiations with the Senate and President Trump.
And we have the opportunity to have a woman in the job who has been in those meetings for more than a decade. No one is more experienced in these high-level negotiations, and it would be foolish to put anyone other than our best negotiator in the room to fight for what we believe in.
Choosing a Speaker of the House is one of the most important decisions we will make next Congress. With Nancy Pelosi, we are fortunate to have the right leader at the right time for this important moment.
