Hello, Worcester!

This Saturday, June 10, the Worcester Public Library is once again hosting Un-Common Cinema.

If you are unfamiliar with the series, it is a film discussion group seeking to bridge touchy subjects with an open heart.

These films are chosen to strike a chord, in order to talk later about whoever we are, however we feel and whatever we believe.

This coming film is a doozy. Birth of a Nation 2016 pokes the bear twice.

The name, artfully chosen, is shared by another film, back in 1915. Also racially charged, the 1915 version of Birth of a Nation glorifies the Klu Klux Klan.

We will not be watching this film.

We will be watching , 2-4 pm in the Saxe Room, of the Main Library, Salem Sq., Birth of a Nation 2016.

This is not your Grandfatherโ€™s Birth of a Nation. The Director, Nate Parker turns the film upside down, and instead focuses on the historical slave rebellion of 1831, orchestrated by slave Nat Turner.

The film is controversial from the beginning. So come to the library,
relax, enjoy the movie, stay for the discussion if you want,
and let it all out.

McGovern, Larson Host Worcester Town Hall on Social Security at the Worcester Senior Center

Senior House Democrats Discuss Plan to Protect Social Security for Seniors

TOMORROW – Monday, May 15 at 10 a.m…

… Congressmen Jim McGovern (D-MA) and John Larson (D-CT) will host a joint town hall to discuss their agenda to protect Social Security for seniors today and well into the future.

ยท WHAT: Congressional Town Hall on Protecting Social Security

ยท WHERE: Senior Center 128 Providence St, Worcester

ยท WHEN: Monday, May 15 at 10 AM โ€“ 12 PM

ยท WHO: Congressman Jim McGovern (D-MA), John Larson (D-CT)

In the wake of House Republicans passing the American Health Care Act, which would let insurance companies charge seniors up to five times more than younger patients โ€“ forcing seniors ages 60 and older to pay up to $17,900 more for healthcare … .

Congressmen McGovern and Larson will discuss their work to stop these dangerous price hikes for seniors and ensure they can enjoy their retirement in dignity.

The McGovern-Larson Proposal:

ยท Tax cut for those who pay taxes on their Social Security benefits

ยท $300 more per year for the typical retiree

ยท Improved cost of living adjustment

Additionally, the McGovern Larson Proposal would:

ยท Provide Greater Retirement Security for Women: Benefit increases that are targeted to women who, on average, live longer than men and receive lower benefits.

ยท Help Low-Income Americans: A minimum benefit to protect workers from falling into poverty in retirement.

ยท Help Elderly Americans: For someone retiring today, their benefits will be 5% greater at age 85 than they would be under the current system.

ยท Workers and Future Retirees: The assurance of knowing the system remains on strong footing and the guarantee that the Trust Fund will be able to meet benefit obligations beyond 2088.

Trials of Muhammad Ali

No conventional sports documentary, THE TRIALS OF MUHAMMAD ALI investigates its extraordinary and often complex subjectโ€™s life outside the boxing ring. From joining the controversial Nation of Islam and changing his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali,to his refusal to serve in the Vietnam War in the name of protesting racial inequality, to his global humanitarian work, Muhammad Ali remains an inspiring and controversial figure. Outspoken and passionate in his beliefs, Ali found himself in the center of Americaโ€™s controversies over
race, religion, and war. From Kartemquin
Films, this film examines how one of the
most celebrated sports champions of the
20th century risked his fame and fortune to follow his faith and conscience.

Zarafa

Under the cover of darkness a small boy,
Maki, loosens the shackles that bind him and escapes into the desert night. Pursued by slavers across the moon-lit savannah, Maki meets Zarafa, a baby giraffe โ€“ and an orphan, just like he is โ€“ as well as the nomad Hassan, Prince of the Desert. Hassan takes them to Alexandria for an audience with the Pasha of Egypt, who orders him to deliver the exotic animal as a gift to King Charles of France. And so Maki, Zarafa and Hassan take off in a hot-air balloon to cross the Mediterranean, setting off an adventure across Northern Africa, the bustling port of Marseilles, and over the snow-capped peaks of the Alps, arriving at last in Paris. But all the while, Maki is determined to find a way to return Zarafa to her rightful home.
