Ouch!

And Rose’s house plants get no relief from her crazy feline!

Remember last year’s potted poseys, posted on this website? Rose’s foray into indoor plantings? All gone! Every frond, bud, root hair. Cece’s peed in, pawed at, puked over all of Rose’s flowers … All gone…

What is SeaWorld hiding?

PETAjoannakrupaNEWTEXT

By Dr. Heather Rally

Anyone who followed the tragic life of Tilikum, the orca at SeaWorld who recently died, should be wondering why SeaWorld is refusing to provide specific details about what led to his death.

The corporation did tell federal officials — it is legally required to do so — that Tilikum’s cause of death was bacterial pneumonia, but all other details remain a mystery.

Necropsies, or animal autopsies, provide important information about the state of an animal’s health prior to and at the time of death. After years of reassurances by SeaWorld that Tilikum was generally in good health, at least until the last year of his life, the public deserves to know what, if any, issues contributed to the development of the pneumonia that reportedly killed him.

Did he have any other infections or any injuries?

What was the state of his heart and other internal organs?

Did Tilikum’s ground-down teeth play a role in his illness and death?

Once upon a time, the public actually did have the right to know the contents of a captive marine mammal’s necropsy report. Public display permits issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) routinely required that these reports be submitted.

But thanks to the lobbying of the captive-animal industry, including SeaWorld, in 1994, Congress took away the NMFS’ authority to include any permit requirement for captive animal care and maintenance, including necropsy reports.

Since then, only the aquariums, zoos and marine theme parks holding whales and dolphins have been privy to the details of the causes of animals’ deaths. Information with enormous scientific value on species that are federally protected and held in trust for the American people by the captive-animal industry has become proprietary.

Tilikum’s situation is different, however. His import permit — issued prior to the 1994 MMPA amendments — requires that a necropsy and clinical history be submitted to the government within 30 days of his death. This is because he came to the U.S. as a killer killer whale — the NMFS wanted to learn what, if anything, a necropsy might reveal when this whale, who had drowned a trainer in Canada before being imported, finally died. Given that he subsequently killed two more people, this requirement now seems highly prescient. Yet SeaWorld has not submitted the report, claiming that the amendments, which passed after the permit was issued, effectively voided that reporting requirement.

The federal government must not allow SeaWorld’s self-serving assertion to go unchallenged.

It was about a year ago when SeaWorld first announced that Tilikum was in failing health, and at 37, he is the first captive male orca who can genuinely be said to have died at an old age. This makes his necropsy report even more valuable. Bacterial pneumonia is a leading cause of death in captive orcas and is also frequently seen in stranded whales and dolphins in the wild. It is often unknown, however, whether pneumonia in wild whales is the primary cause of death or the result of debilitation from another disease process. Coupled with his detailed life history, which is typically absent for stranded animals, Tilikum’s necropsy and pathology reports could contain information that would be applicable to wild whales. Releasing these reports to the greater scientific community and to the public is simply sound science and good policy.

If any good whatsoever can come from Tilikum’s tortured existence, it’s that learning more about what killed him could prevent the same thing from happening to other orcas, both in captivity and in the wild.

SeaWorld should disclose Tilikum’s health records. If it does not, the NMFS should enforce the requirements of Tilikum’s permit, compel SeaWorld to submit the reports and make them available to the public.

IN CELEBRATION OF OUR ENVIRONMENT!

Clark University’s Earth Week!

The Wild & Scenic Film Festival comes to Worcester!

Clark University and the Greater Worcester Land Trust host the Wild and Scenic Film Festival on Tour at Clark University’s Razzo Hall – April 23

FREE TO ALL!

Doors open at 3:30 pm

The Wild & Scenic Film Festival is a collection of films from the annual festival held the third week of January in Nevada City, CA, which is now in its 14th year!

Wild & Scenic focuses on films which speak to the environmental concerns and celebrations of our planet. “Films featured at Wild & Scenic give people a sense of place,” says Tour Associate Director, Amelia Workman. “In today’s busy world, it is easy to disconnect from our role in the global ecosystem. When we realize that the change we need in this world begins with us, we start making a difference. Come get inspired!”

The Wild & Scenic Film Festival was started by the watershed advocacy group, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) in 2003.

The festival’s namesake is in celebration of SYRCL’s landmark victory to receive “Wild & Scenic” status for 39 miles of the South Yuba River in 1999.

The 5-day event features more than 150 awardwinning films and welcomes over 100 guest speakers, celebrities, and activists who bring a human face to the environmental movement. The home
festival kicksoff the international tour to over 150 communities around the globe, allowing SYRCL to share their success as an environmental group with other organizations.

The festival is building a network of grassroots organizations connected by a common goal of using film to
inspire activism. With the support of National Partners: Patagonia, CLIF Bar, Sierra Nevada Brewing, Orion Magazine, Klean Kanteen, Earthjustice, and Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, the
festival can reach an even larger audience.

Featured at the tour event in Worcester, The Thousand Year Journey: Orgeon to Patagonia, Jedidiah quits his job to bicycle to the southern tip of Patagonia; One Woman Roadblock, Marilyn led her community in defeating proposed mine sites, and several more. The festival is a natural extension of GWLT’s work to inspire people to engage with and act on behalf of natural spaces. This event is part of Clark University’s Earth Week, a celebration of our planet.

MASS AUDUBON CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES

Enjoy Free Admission, Guided Nature Walks, and Family Friendly, Hands-on Activities at Mass Audubon’s Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary this Saturday, April 9.

Mass Audubon protects the nature of Massachusetts for people and wildlife, through conservation, education and advocacy.  Their land conservation efforts have resulted in a system of wildlife sanctuaries that is now the largest private ownership of conserved land in Massachusetts.

In addition to protecting critical habitat for native species, Mass Audubon’s land conservation efforts provide many quality-of-life benefits, including places to learn about and enjoy nature, like Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Worcester, aka “Your Sanctuary in the City.”

“Broad Meadow Brook is not only a wildlife sanctuary, but a place where people can find sanctuary, too,” says Outreach and Marketing Coordinator Janice Schlickman.  “You don’t have to plan for months, travel for hours, nor spend lots of money to get away, enjoy some recreation, reach for better health, and experience peace.  You can do it all right here, right now.  The nature trails are well marked and easy to travel; some are especially designed for folks with baby strollers and assistive devices, so the whole family can enjoy a walk together.”

This year marks 100 years of Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuaries …

… and on the 100th day of the year – Saturday, April 9 – Broad Meadow Brook is celebrating.

Admission is free all day, and between 11 am and 2 pm, you can enjoy these special celebration activities:

Guided Nature Walks (Depart at 11:30 am and 1:00 pm

Get to know “Your Sanctuary in the City” with an experienced teacher-naturalist as your guide.  Walk along Broad Meadow Brook’s accessible and sensory trail, for all persons with all abilities.  Explore several habitats including a woodland forest, wetland and pond. Hands-on, Nature-themed Activities (Ongoing from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm)

Make your own pine cone bird feeder or create your own bookmarks using tracking stamps.  Read a nature story together.  Help create a list of “100 Great Things about Broad Meadow Brook”, by adding your thoughts on a butterfly shaped post-it.   Stop in the nature center, grab a trail map, scavenger hunt, Quest or Discovery booklet and embark on a self-guided exploration.

With 5 miles of walking trails over 430 acres, Mass Audubon’s Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary is New England’s largest urban wildlife sanctuary.

Located at 414 Massasoit Road in Worcester, it is easily accessible from Routes 122, 20, 290 and the Mass Pike.  It is also on the WRTA Millbury bus line #22.  (The bus stops directly in front of the Nature Center.)

“Most people can’t believe it once they finally get out on the sanctuary; they always wish they had found Broad Meadow Brook sooner,” says Schlickman.  “Don’t wait.  Carpe diem… and celebrate with us on April 9!”

Visited my friend and her family in the country today …

… Patty, owner of Barton Brook Kennels in Leicester, has this HUGE AMAZING GARDEN on her huge, amazing stretch of land!!! And this country lady also has a horse, pony, sheep, goats, dogs and cat!

Plus the dogs she boards!

Such GREAT fun seeing the farm animals in their natural element, as God, in her infinite wisdom, intended… Jett had fun running off lead! Pat’s daughter and grand kids taught me how to pick lettuce correctly (from the bottom, OUTSIDE leaves first so the plant keeps growing strong…).

CAM00200

I got some mint, too, which this Italian-American will stir into her spaghetti sauce. Wonderful for your iced tea, too!

Thank you, Patty!

Rose

P.S. Your family rules! They know so much about the land and animals and good food. So polite and nice!  You are blessed, gal pal!
