Immigration law the focus of lecture on Constitution Day, Sept. 14

Clark University will host “Immigration Law: Does the Constitution Trump Building a Wall and Mass Deportations?” a lecture by Anna Law, Hebert Kurz Chair in Constitutional Rights at Brooklyn College, at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14, in Tilton Hall, 2nd floor of the Higgins University Center, 950 Main St.

This event is a part of Clark’s official observance of Constitution Day.

Professor Law investigates the interactions of law, legal institutions, and politics. She is author of “The Immigration Battle in American Courts,” which examines the role of the federal judiciary in U.S. immigration policy, and the institutional evolution of the Supreme Court and U.S. Courts of Appeals.

Professor Law is a former program analyst at the bipartisan, blue-ribbon United States Commission on Immigration Reform.

She has shared her expertise with the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

She has received funding from the NSF for her current research, which focuses on immigration, federalism and slavery in American history.

This lecture is sponsored by Clark’s Law & Society Program, Pre-Law Advising, the Political Science Department, and the office of the Provost. It is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.

Help us END THE STIGMA – Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day at UMass Medical School!

As part of National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Week, September 5 – 11, and World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, UMass Medical School and the Department of Psychiatry will host a day to raise awareness and provide education about suicide prevention.

Please join us Wednesday September 7th from 9:00-12:00, Medical school lobby and from 1:00 – 5:00, Sherman Building lobby.

There will be a short program beginning at 11:30.

Displays will include information tables and awareness ribbons to be distributed.

Each year, 42,773 Americans die by suicide, making suicide the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.

Of those, more than 6,000 are military veterans.

For every suicide there are ~ 25 attempts, resulting in over one million attempts annually.

Suicide has lasting impacts on individuals, families, friends and communities.

Estimates indicate the number of survivors of suicide loss in the U.S. is 15.09 million (1 of every 21 Americans in 2014).
